Are you the reason healthcare costs are so high?
A recent study found that eye care providers prescribe more brand-name drugs than other health care specialists.
The study examined data from Medicare Part D claims in 2013. It found that 71% of OMD claims and 67% of OD claims were for name brand medication. The biggest culprit? Glaucoma meds.
Alright, so eye doctors have expensive taste, what’s the big deal?
The problem is that money doesn’t grow on trees. The study estimates that switching to generic drops when possible could save $148 million. However, the authors also suggest that Medicare should negotiate better ophthalmic drug pricing. (via)
