What your patient might ask you…

Will losing weight help my dry eye?

A recent study showed a correlation between higher body fat percentage and dry eye. The study included over 300 participants and each participant completed a dry eye questionnaire. Measurements for body mass index, body fat percentage, weight, height, and waist circumference were obtained.

What did they find?

The research team found a “moderate positive correlation suggesting that people with higher body fat percentage may be more likely to report dry eye symptoms”.

What’s the theory?

It is well-known that adipose tissue contributes to a rise in circulating levels of proinflammatory mediators. The theory is that there’s a link between the release of obesity-induced nonspecific proinflammatory factors systemically and the production of an ocular inflammatory condition such as dry eye. (via)
