Research demonstrates protection and darkness are the most important drivers of satisfaction for photochromic lens wearers

PINELLAS PARK, Fla., January 28, 2021 – Transitions Optical is launching a new education course called, “Offer Your Patients the Best” to reveal patient insights and research demonstrating that wearers prioritize darkness in photochromic lenses.

Presented by Chris King and Mayara Castillo from Transitions and Dr. Chris Lievens, the course dives deep into the best a lens can offer from the patient’s perspective and how to evaluate photochromic technologies entering the market so eyecare professionals can confidently offer patients the best—for better patient satisfaction.

The course includes research that shows that after two weeks of trial, wearers were significantly more satisfied with the level of darkness and activation speed of Transitions® Signature® GEN 8 lenses (with ANSI category 3 darkness), over a lens that has ANSI category 2 darkness but is a bit faster to fadeback. The primary reason for preferring Transitions Signature GEN 8 lenses was that the lenses got darker outdoors. The wearers were similarly satisfied with the fadeback speed of both lenses, showing that without a premium level of darkness, the wearer may not be as satisfied. Research also shows that protection and outdoor darkness are the two top expectations for photochromic lenses.

“We take our responsibility as the category leader seriously and our product design process starts with understanding what patients want,” said Patience Cook, director, North America marketing. “Now, we’re taking that message to eyecare professionals, making sure they understand that photochromic lenses are not all the same. Our research shows that if the lenses are not dark enough, patients will be disappointed. Eyecare professionals attending our course will learn more about patient priorities and options available to meet their needs in the colors and lens designs they want—so eyecare professionals can keep focused on patient satisfaction.”

The new course “Offer Your Patients the Best” will be offered as part of Transitions® The Pulse virtual event on Tuesday, February 9. Optical industry professionals interested in attending the event can register at using the code TOIPulse.
