- Black EyeCare Perspective co-founders, Drs. Adam Ramsey and Darryl Glover, receive the New England College of Optometry Presidential Medal for having a unique impact on the college, the entire profession of optometry and Black students and patients in a profound way.
BOSTON, MA – Black EyeCare Perspective, founded by optometrists Drs. Adam Ramsey and Darryl Glover, was designed, and created to cultivate and foster lifelong relationships between Black eye doctors, patients and the eyecare industry. Along with Drs. Essence Johnson (Chief Visionary Officer), Jacobi Cleaver (Director of Program Management) and Tiffany Humes (Business Transformation Manager), Black EyeCare Perspective is redefining the color of the eyecare industry 1% at a time by creating a pipeline for Black students into optometry. Black EyeCare Perspective’s 13% Promise initiative is a call for equity in the increase of Black and African American representation in the industry to align with the United States Census population.
In August of 2020, the New England College of Optometry (NECO) joined Black EyeCare Perspective’s 13% Promise, the first school or college of optometry to do so. Since the signing, NECO has implemented many strategies to increase Black representation in the field of optometry, one major one being the establishment of the Warby Parker Scholarship which covers the tuition of two Black scholars for the college’s four year doctor of optometry program. Black EyeCare Perspective is proud to see one of their inaugural Black EyeCare Perspective Pre-Optometry Club members as one of the Fall 2020 recipients, Avia Dolberry, who also was a video contest winner during the Spring 2021 Signing Day Event.
During NECO’s commencement on May 15, 2022, Drs. Adam Ramsey and Darryl Glover accepted the Presidential Medal on behalf of Black EyeCare Perspective. This honor is “awarded to eye care professionals or professional groups who have made a unique impact on the College and its constituencies” Black EyeCare Perspective is “creating brave spaces and facilitating courageous conversations within the eyecare community through diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives which is impacting the entire profession of optometry and its patients in a profound way.” Dr. Glover reminded the class of 2020 that they are the future of eye care and Dr. Ramsey delivered the charge to the graduates to open their doors to students of color, people that may not look like them because they “are the future. . .and can shape and make the profession better.”
